Arbogast

d. 394 · 4th century · Also known as Flavius Arbogastes

Arbogast was a Frankish general in the Roman army who became the dominant figure at the western court of the young emperor Valentinian II. After Valentinian's death in 392 he raised the rhetorician Eugenius as emperor, but their army was defeated by Theodosius I at the Battle of the Frigidus in 394, and Arbogast took his own life.
