Theodosius I

d. 395 CE · 4th century

Theodosius I was a Roman emperor who died in 395 CE, the last to rule both the eastern and western halves of the empire. He made Nicene Christianity the official religion of the state. After his death the empire was divided permanently between his sons, a division that accounts of the Byzantine Empire treat as a foundation of the eastern empire and accounts of the Roman Empire link to the west's decline.
