House of Schwarzburg

The House of Schwarzburg was a Thuringian noble family, counts from the 12th century, whose lands lay around Schwarzburg, Arnstadt, Sondershausen and Rudolstadt. In 1349 Günther of Schwarzburg was elected German king against Charles IV, and on his withdrawal the family received pledged lands such as Gelnhausen. Its branches became the principalities of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, which lasted until 1918.
