House of Schönburg

The Schönburgs are a German noble family of imperial ministerials from the Saale region near Naumburg, first recorded in the 12th century. They built up lordships along the Zwickauer Mulde around Glauchau, Waldenburg, Lichtenstein and Hartenstein, which they held under Saxon sovereignty after 1740 while keeping special rights. One branch was raised to princely rank in 1790, and the family lost its estates in 1945.
