Hovhannes-Smbat III

r. c. 1020–1041 · 11th century · Also known as John-Smbat III

Hovhannes-Smbat III was the Bagratid king of Armenia who ruled from Ani from about 1020 to 1041, after the death of his father Gagik I. He shared the kingdom with his brother Ashot IV, who held the eastern lands. Threatened by the Byzantine Empire after the campaigns of Basil II, he made a will leaving Ani to Byzantium after his death, which led to its annexation in 1045.
