Humbert II of Viennois

1312–1355 · 14th century

Humbert II of Viennois was the last independent Dauphin of the Viennois, ruling from 1333. He founded a university at Grenoble in 1339 and led a papal crusade to Smyrna in 1345 to 1347. Heavily in debt and without an heir, he sold the Dauphiné to France in 1349; it passed to the king's eldest son, who thereafter bore the title Dauphin.
