Hurricane Mitch

1998 · 20th century

Hurricane Mitch was one of the deadliest Atlantic hurricanes on record, striking Central America in late October and early November 1998. Its torrential rains caused floods and landslides that killed about 11,000 people, mostly in Honduras and Nicaragua, including some 2,000 in a mudslide on the Casita volcano. It destroyed much of the region's roads, bridges and crops, setting back the economies of Honduras and Nicaragua by years.
