Ibn Arabi

1165–1240 · 13th century · Also known as Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi

Ibn Arabi was an Andalusian Sufi mystic, philosopher and poet, born in Murcia in 1165, who became one of the most influential thinkers in Islamic history. After years of travel in al-Andalus and the Maghreb he settled in the east and died in Damascus in 1240. His works, including The Meccan Revelations and The Bezels of Wisdom, developed the doctrine later called the unity of being, and he became known as 'the greatest master'.
