Idumaeans

Also known as Idumeans

The Idumaeans were the people of Idumaea, the region of southern Judaea and the Negev settled by Edomites from the 6th century BCE. The Hasmonean ruler John Hyrcanus conquered them in the late 2nd century BCE and made them adopt Judaism, and Herod the Great came from an Idumaean family. In 68 CE Idumaean fighters entered Jerusalem at the Zealots' invitation and killed the former high priest Ananus.
