Illinois Country
The Illinois Country was the French name for the middle Mississippi valley, in present-day Illinois and Missouri. From the late 17th century French settlers founded villages such as Kaskaskia and Cahokia there, and from 1717 it was governed as part of Louisiana, supplying grain to New Orleans. France ceded it after the Seven Years' War.
