The Iranian Green Movement was a wave of mass protests that followed the disputed presidential election of June 2009, in which Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner. Supporters of the defeated reformist candidates Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi demonstrated in Tehran and other cities. The authorities crushed the protests, killing dozens and arresting thousands, and placed Mousavi and Karroubi under house arrest.
