Iron Gates (Algeria)
The Iron Gates of Algeria, known in French as the Portes de Fer, are a narrow pass through the Biban mountains between Algiers and Constantine. The defile carried the main route between the coast and eastern Algeria, and control of it gave the Kabyle rulers of the Kalâa of the Ait Abbas leverage over traffic and tribute. French forces crossed it in 1839, an act that helped provoke Abd al-Qadir's renewed war.
