Kabyles

Also known as Kabyle people

The Kabyles are a Berber people of Kabylia in northern Algeria, a mountainous region east of Algiers that includes the Djurdjura range. Speaking the Kabyle language, they lived in dense village communities governed by assemblies and long kept their autonomy from Ottoman Algiers. They led the Mokrani revolt of 1871 against French rule and played a large part in Algeria's war of independence.
