Greater Kabylia

Also known as Great Kabylia

Greater Kabylia is the mountainous Berber region of northern Algeria centred on the Djurdjura range, east of Algiers, with Tizi Ouzou as its main town today. Its Kabyle villages long kept strong self-government. In the 16th century it was the base of the Kingdom of Kuku, and it resisted French conquest until 1857, rising again in 1871.
