Isawa Castle

Also known as Isawa-jō

Isawa Castle was a fortress built in 802 by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro in the Kitakami basin, in present-day Ōshū, Iwate Prefecture, during the wars against the Emishi. Soon afterwards it replaced Taga Castle as headquarters of the Chinjufu, the court's military command in the north. Excavations have uncovered its earthen walls and government buildings.
