Sakanoue no Tamuramaro

758–811 · 8th century

Sakanoue no Tamuramaro was a Japanese general and court noble of the early Heian period. Appointed seii taishōgun in 797, he led the campaigns against the Emishi of northern Honshu, built Isawa Castle in 802 and received the surrender of the Emishi leader Aterui that year. He was later honoured as a model warrior, and tradition links him with the founding of the Kiyomizu-dera temple in Kyoto.
