Iskandar Muda

c. 1583–1636 · 17th century

Iskandar Muda was sultan of Aceh from 1607 to 1636, the height of its power. He controlled the pepper trade of northern Sumatra, curbed the great merchant-nobles and conquered Aru, Pahang, Kedah and other states on both sides of the Strait of Malacca, carrying off their rulers and people. His great fleet failed to take Portuguese Malacca in 1629. His court was a centre of Malay Islamic learning.
