Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan

1998– · 20th century

The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan was a militant Islamist group founded in 1998 by Tahir Yuldashev and Juma Namangani with the aim of overthrowing President Islam Karimov. Based in Tajikistan and Afghanistan, it made armed incursions into Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in 1999 and 2000. It fought alongside the Taliban after 2001, lost Namangani, and later moved to Pakistan before declaring allegiance to the Islamic State in 2015.
