Shavkat Mirziyoyev

b. 1957 · 20th century

Shavkat Mirziyoyev is an Uzbek politician who became president of Uzbekistan in 2016 after the death of Islam Karimov, whose prime minister he had been since 2003. He freed some political prisoners, ended forced labour in the cotton harvest, liberalised the currency and improved relations with neighbouring states, while keeping a strong presidential system.
