1933–2002 · 20th century · Also known as IRI, Institute for Industrial Reconstruction

The Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale (IRI) was an Italian state holding company founded in 1933 to rescue banks and industrial firms ruined by the Great Depression. It took controlling stakes in major banks, steel, shipbuilding and engineering, making the Italian state one of the largest industrial owners in Europe. IRI remained central to the post-war economic miracle and was dissolved in 2002.
