Ivan Alexander of Bulgaria

r. 1331–1371 · 14th century

Ivan Alexander was tsar of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1331 to 1371. He made peace with Serbia, recovered lands from Byzantium and presided over a cultural flowering at Tarnovo, including the illuminated Tetraevangelion of 1355–1356 and the Bulgarian translation of the Manasses Chronicle. By dividing his realm between his sons Ivan Shishman at Tarnovo and Ivan Sratsimir at Vidin, he left it weakened in the face of the Ottoman advance.
