Jaluit Gesellschaft

1887–1914 · 19th century · Also known as Jaluit Company

The Jaluit Gesellschaft was a German trading company formed in 1887 by Hamburg firms engaged in the copra trade of the Marshall Islands. From 1888 it paid the costs of administering the German protectorate in return for a monopoly of trade and land rights, so the colony was in effect run by a company. Its administrative role ended in 1906.
