Jamaica Labour Party

1943– · 20th century · Also known as JLP

The Jamaica Labour Party is one of Jamaica's two main political parties, founded in 1943 by the trade unionist Alexander Bustamante, who led it to victory in the first elections under universal suffrage in 1944. Bustamante became the country's first prime minister at independence in 1962. Generally conservative and pro-business, the party has alternated in power with the People's National Party.
