Person
Janus of Cyprus
Janus was king of Cyprus from 1398 to 1432. Born while his father was a prisoner of Genoa, he tried without success to recover Famagusta from the Genoese. Cypriot raids provoked the Mamluk sultan Barsbay, whose army invaded in 1426, defeated Janus at Khirokitia and took him prisoner to Cairo. He was freed for a large ransom, and Cyprus became tributary to Egypt.
