Jayachandra

r. c. 1170–1194 · 12th century · Also known as Jaichand, Jayachchandra, Jayachandra of the Gahadavala dynasty

Jayachandra was the last major king of the Gahadavala dynasty, ruling Kannauj and Varanasi from about 1170 to 1194. He held a large kingdom in the middle Ganges plain and was a rival of the Chahamana king Prithviraj Chauhan, a rivalry much elaborated in later bardic legend. He was defeated and killed by Muhammad of Ghor at the Battle of Chandawar in 1194.
