Jean-Louis Ferrand

d. 1808 · 18th century

Jean-Louis Ferrand was a French general who governed the former Spanish colony of Santo Domingo after French forces withdrew there from Haiti in 1803–1804. He repelled Jean-Jacques Dessalines' siege of the city in 1805, revived trade and restored slavery. When Dominican creoles under Juan Sánchez Ramírez rose in 1808, he was defeated at Palo Hincado and killed himself after the battle.
