Battle of Palo Hincado

1808 · 19th century · Part of the Spanish reconquest of Santo Domingo

The Battle of Palo Hincado was fought on 7 November 1808 near El Seibo in the east of the colony of Santo Domingo. Dominican creole forces led by Juan Sánchez Ramírez, with support from Puerto Rico, defeated the French troops of General Jean-Louis Ferrand, who killed himself after the battle. The victory led to the siege of Santo Domingo, which ended French rule in 1809 and returned the colony to Spain.
