Charles Leclerc (general)

1772–1802 · 18th century · Also known as Charles Victoire Emmanuel Leclerc

Charles Victoire Emmanuel Leclerc was a French general and the husband of Napoleon's sister Pauline Bonaparte. In 1801–1802 he led the large expedition sent to Saint-Domingue to restore French authority; he seized Toussaint Louverture by treachery and deported him to France, but the attempt to restore slavery provoked renewed revolt. Leclerc died of yellow fever in November 1802, and his army was defeated in 1803.
