Saint-Domingue
Saint-Domingue was the French colony on the western part of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. In the eighteenth century its sugar and coffee plantations, worked by enslaved Africans, made it one of the most profitable colonies in the world. The Haitian Revolution that began in 1791 ended French rule, and the colony became the independent state of Haiti in 1804, a major loss for the French Empire.
