Charles Lawrence

1709–1760 · 18th century

Charles Lawrence was a British army officer and governor of Nova Scotia from 1753. Doubting the loyalty of the French-speaking Acadians, he and his council ordered their deportation in 1755, expelling thousands to the British colonies and beyond. He then invited New England Planters to settle their lands, and in 1758 called Nova Scotia's first elected assembly.
