Toussaint Louverture

Toussaint Louverture was the leading figure of the Haitian Revolution, a formerly enslaved man who became the commander of the revolutionary forces in the French colony of Saint-Domingue. He defeated rival forces and governed the colony before being captured by Napoleon's expedition and dying in a French prison in 1803. Accounts of the French Empire discuss the revolution, which produced independent Haiti in 1804, as a major blow to French colonial power.
