Saint-Domingue
Origins
French buccaneers and planters spread from Tortuga onto the western part of Hispaniola in the mid-17th century. In 1665 the French West India Company appointed Bertrand d'Ogeron governor, who organised settlement, and Spain recognised French possession of the west of the island in the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697.
Rule and society
By the 1780s Saint-Domingue produced around 40 per cent of Europe's sugar and over half its coffee. About half a million enslaved Africans, worked under the Code Noir with appalling mortality, vastly outnumbered some 30,000 whites and a similar number of free people of colour. Cap-Français was the cultural capital and Port-au-Prince the seat of government from 1770. Racial hierarchy and planter resentment of metropolitan trade rules ran deep.
Decline and legacy
The revolution in France set off struggles among planters, free people of colour and, from August 1791, a vast slave uprising. France abolished slavery in 1793 to 1794. Toussaint Louverture rose to govern the colony, but Napoleon's attempt to restore control failed, and Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaimed Haiti's independence on 1 January 1804.
