1795–1814 · 18th century

Jemmapes was a department of the French Republic and Empire, created in 1795 from the County of Hainaut and neighbouring lands after the annexation of the Austrian Netherlands. Named after the French victory at Jemappes in 1792, it had its capital at Mons. After Napoleon's fall in 1814 it became the province of Hainaut, under the Netherlands and then Belgium.
