Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos

1691–1767 · 17th century

The Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos were a group of mission towns founded among the Chiquitano and other peoples in the lowlands of eastern Bolivia between 1691 and 1760. The Jesuits organised the towns around large wooden churches and taught European music and crafts. After the Jesuits were expelled in 1767 the towns survived, and six of the churches are a World Heritage Site.
