Jiu River
The Jiu is a river of south-western Romania, about 340 km long, that rises in the Southern Carpathians, cuts through them in a gorge and flows south across Oltenia past Târgu Jiu and Craiova to the Danube. Its upper valley, the Jiu Valley, was Romania's main coal-mining area, and in the 13th century the land of the voivode Litovoi lay along it.
