Jnatrikas

6th–5th century BCE · 6th century BCE · Also known as Jnatri clan, Natas

The Jnatrikas were a Kshatriya clan of ancient north-east India, members of the Vajji confederacy, living at Kundagrama near Vaishali in modern Bihar. They are known mainly as the clan of Mahavira, the 24th tirthankara of Jainism, whose father Siddhartha was one of their chiefs. Jain texts call Mahavira Jnatriputra, 'son of the Jnatrikas', and Buddhist texts name him Nigantha Nataputta.
