Joash of Judah

late 9th – early 8th century BCE · 8th century BCE · Also known as Jehoash of Judah

Joash, also called Jehoash, was king of Judah in the late 9th and early 8th centuries BCE. According to the Bible he was hidden as an infant when his grandmother Athaliah killed the royal family, and crowned at the age of seven by the priest Jehoiada. He repaired the temple in Jerusalem but bought off Hazael of Damascus with its treasures, and was murdered by his own officials.
