Athaliah

d. c. 835 BCE · 9th century BCE

Athaliah was queen of Judah for about six years in the 9th century BCE, the only woman to rule either Hebrew kingdom in her own right. A daughter of the house of Omri, she married Jehoram of Judah, and after her son Ahaziah was killed in Jehu's coup she seized power and killed most of the royal family. The priest Jehoiada overthrew and killed her, placing her grandson Joash on the throne.
