Jehu

reigned c. 841–814 BCE · 9th century BCE

Jehu was king of Israel from about 841 to 814 BCE. An army commander, he seized the throne in a bloody coup supported by the prophet Elisha, killing King Joram of Israel, King Ahaziah of Judah and Queen Jezebel and wiping out the house of Omri. The Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III shows him, or his envoy, bowing before the Assyrian king.
