Jezebel

9th century BCE · 9th century BCE

Jezebel was a Phoenician princess, the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians, who married King Ahab of Israel in the ninth century BCE. The Books of Kings portray her as a promoter of the worship of Baal and an enemy of the prophet Elijah, and tell how she was thrown from a window at Jezreel on Jehu's orders after his coup. Her name became a byword for a wicked woman.
