Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III

c. 825 BCE · 9th century BCE

The Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III is a black limestone monument from Nimrud, erected around 825 BCE and now in the British Museum. Its relief panels show tribute brought to the Assyrian king from five lands; one panel shows Jehu of Israel, or his envoy, prostrate before Shalmaneser, the only known contemporary image of a king of Israel or Judah.
