Shalmaneser III

r. 859–824 BCE · 9th century BCE

Shalmaneser III was king of Assyria from 859 to 824 BCE. He campaigned almost every year, annexing Bit-Adini on the Euphrates, fighting a coalition of Syrian and Levantine kings at Qarqar in 853 BCE, and taking tribute from Israel, as shown on his Black Obelisk. His wars also reached Urartu, Que in Cilicia, the Zagros and the Chaldean tribes of Babylonia.
