Shalmaneser V

reigned 727–722 BCE · 8th century BCE

Shalmaneser V was king of Assyria from 727 to 722 BCE, son and successor of Tiglath-Pileser III. When King Hoshea of Israel stopped paying tribute, he besieged Samaria, which fell around 722 BCE, ending the northern kingdom. He died or was overthrown at about that time, and his successor Sargon II claimed the conquest and deported much of Israel's population.
