Gilead
Gilead is the hilly region east of the Jordan River, on both sides of the Jabbok, in present-day north-western Jordan. Israelite tribes settled there, and it was long contested between the Kingdom of Israel and Aram-Damascus until Tiglath-pileser III annexed it to Assyria around 733 BCE. The biblical 'balm of Gilead' refers to a resin associated with the region.
