Zagros Mountains
The Zagros Mountains are a long mountain range in western Iran, stretching from the borders of Turkey to the Persian Gulf and separating the Mesopotamian plain from the Iranian plateau. Their highland peoples repeatedly pressed on Mesopotamian states, including the Akkadian Empire. The Zagros was the homeland of the Medes, and its tribes, including the Zand and Lak, formed the core of Karim Khan's Zand Empire.
