Nineveh
Nineveh was an ancient city on the Tigris opposite modern Mosul, and the last great capital of the Assyrian Empire. Ashurbanipal assembled his famous library of cuneiform tablets there. Its capture and destruction in 612 BCE by a coalition of the Median Empire and Babylonians led by Nabopolassar marked the fall of Assyria.
