Akkadian Empire

Also known as Akkadians

The Akkadian Empire was the first known empire in Mesopotamia, founded by Sargon of Akkad around the twenty-fourth century BCE. It united the Sumerian city-states and extended its influence over neighbouring regions, including Elam. It declined amid revolts, invasions and climatic stress such as the 4.2-kiloyear event, and was followed by the Neo-Sumerian Empire.
