Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi

1746–1827 · 18th century

Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi was a Swiss educational reformer born in Zürich. In his novel Leonard and Gertrude and his schools for poor children, most famously at Yverdon from 1805, he argued that teaching should develop the whole child, 'head, heart and hand', through observation and activity. His methods influenced elementary education across Europe and North America.
