Johann Jakob Breitinger

1701–1776 · 18th century

Johann Jakob Breitinger was a Swiss philologist and critic who taught Hebrew and Greek in Zürich. His Critische Dichtkunst of 1740, written in alliance with Johann Jakob Bodmer, argued for imagination and feeling in poetry against the strict rules of Johann Christoph Gottsched, and the debate prepared the way for the German literature of the later eighteenth century.
