Johann Wilhelm, Duke of Saxe-Eisenach, ruled the small Ernestine duchy from 1698 to 1729. His court at Eisenach kept a notable musical establishment, with Georg Philipp Telemann as Kapellmeister, in the town where Johann Sebastian Bach was born. His line died out with his son William Henry in 1741, after which Eisenach passed to Saxe-Weimar.
